It is a colorless transparent liquid with a pleasant aromatic odor, insoluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, and soluble in most organic solvents such as hydrocarbons and ether. It is mainly used in organic synthesis and also as a solvent and foaming agent for polystyrene.

Isopentane can be used as the refrigerant of catalyst in the production of low-density polyethylene, the refrigerant of liquefied natural gas, the foaming agent of expandable polystyrene, the foaming agent of polyurethane foam system, as well as the raw material for solvent and catalytic dehydrogenation to isoprene and chlorination and hydrolysis to pentanol. This product has a high octane value and can be used as a gasoline component.
